Soundcloud Rap: A Real Genre that took over

How a bedroom-produced genre forced a change in a half-century old’s “recording industry recognition” status

Published

on

In 2016 the Recording Industry Association of America moved to change its 50 year old certification process to better accommodate streaming mainly because a name; that til this day might not represent anything to you, Bryson Tiller.

A “bedroom” producer whose song: “DONT” has reached close to 100 Million plays just on 1 stream service, soundcloud, and if you combine 200M spotify, and 310M youtube plays (and counting) , Tiller easily surpasses most of the “well known names” industry has pushed to maintain. Some of these old-school rappers with strong ties to the old industry have been very vocal in their rejection of what they call “mumble rap” and what it represents to their financial future.

The base of the movement has been South Florida where a colony of a style of rap is at once extremely cursed, wrought of iron and played to the bone. SoundCloud rap as a genre—as opposed to rap music posted to SoundCloud—usually means scuzzy production, punchy bars, hooky choruses, anarchic shock tactics, and, more often than not, deeply troubled stars.

An emerging class of artists reacting to a changing music industry, these rappers/producers took control of their own destinies, releasing their own music on SoundCloud, succeeding at a pace that the traditional music industry couldn’t keep up with.  Starting with Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yatchy and Denzel Curry, although like every single genre, there is not an absolute truth of who was the first one, keeping in mind, SC users with regular accounts would delete their old tracks in order to make room for new ones.

Denzel Curry—straight out of Carol City, Miami Gardens—can tune his voice to a manic setting, spitting on devastating beats that sound just two degrees short of blasting out speakers. But he brings a level of emotional resonance and elegance to his writing that isn’t typically associated with the form. Curry’s music ripples with the kind of pain that liquifies the heart and chills the soul.

SoundCloud rap as a genre—as opposed to rap music posted to SC—usually means scuzzy production, punchy bars, hooky choruses, anarchic shock tactics, face tattoos, and, more often than not, deeply troubled stars.

The genre has already moved on from SC as their main platform, to become a revenue machine on all streaming services, one single platform has seem to capture the real audience and even thought it started as a clickbait page for brawls it became the biggest platform for underground rap around the world. Many of these acts are grabbing all the streaming cash from YT instead of just uploading their tracks to soundcloud; they rely, somehow, in getting enough dough to shoot a video which eventually gets instant stardom when selected by worldstarhiphop. Even the most disliked video can easily get viral just for “the lols” and comments..

Although WSHH curated content seems to be on point, it is without any doubt soundcloud rap the primary source of rap on the platform, and this rap slowly and steady is making dents inside a divided America in the most sarcastic way, breaking through new forms of recognition via streaming revenue where a disfranchised youth dictates the pattern VS a corporate America which had no choice but to adapt to these tattoo faced rappers’ tactics in order to maintain their privileged “music industry” lives.

Akeos is part of the new wave of producers who have been shifting the former dubstep vibe (aka riddim) towards heavy headbanging track full of syncopated beats and truly dark laser synths that drill one’s skull harder and harder every single BPM.

His newest MUERTE comes in a massive compilation (that if you fancy, you are just 2 clicks away to discover it)

Tripolar Dub is mindblowing

Costa Gold Pt Funkero – A Queima Roupa (Remix Dom Mariachi)

Pagodao meets grime.. This remix from Dom Mariachi is pure gold.

Pagode is a Brazilian style of music which originated in Salvador, Brazil, and quickly went down to Rio de Janeiro region, as a subgenre of Samba. Pagode originally meant a celebration with lots of food, music, dance and party.

Apparently, as time has gone by, the term “Pagode” has been degraded by many commercial groups who have played a version of the music full of clichés, and there is now a sense in which the term Pagode means very commercial pop, a negative term and getting now ghetto-appeal.. it is perfect for Marginal-Original!!
